HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT TEMPLE OF LITERATURE
AND IMPERIAL ACADEMY

On the Practical experienced trip to Hanoi, we were lucky enough to visit many historical places . Among them, I was the most impressed by the Temple Of Literature and Imparial Academy, the symbol of Ha Noi. Although the trip was not very long, it gave  me more knowledge  about  this historic spot. This area  is one of the most famous places that attracts many people to visit.  It is one of several temples in our country which are dedicated to Confucius, sages and scholars and also the first university in Viet Nam. The Temple of Literature was founded in 1070 and the Imperial Academy was built in 1076.   It’s on Van Mieu street, Dong Da township, Ha Noi. It’s about 270km from Lao Cai to there. You can get there by coach and thanks to the new high way,  it only takes you 4 hours to get there. The Temple is located to the south of Thang Long Citadel. The Temple of Literature – Imparial Academy included 4 main gates and 5 courtyards.
The first courtyard

The first courtyard and the gate leading to the second

The first courtyard extends to the Great Middle gate (Đại Trung môn), which is flanked by two smaller gates: the "Attained Talent" gate (Đạt Tài môn) and the "Accomplished Virtue" gate ( Thành Đức môn). There are a lot of green trees and lawns in the 2 sides. There are also 4 words: Nhân, Nghĩa, Tài, Đức in the both side.

Second Courtyard

The second courtyard contains the Khue Van pavilion, an unique architectural work built in 1805 and a symbol of present day Hanoi.
Third Courtyard

Thien Quang Tinh well

In the third courtyard is the Thien Quang Tinh well. On either side of the well stand two great halls which house the treasures of the temple.
Doctors’ stone tablets

The Doctors’ stone tablets

In 1484, the King Le Thanh Tong erected 116 stone tablets honour talent and encourage scholars. The turtle is a symbol of longevity. The shape and size of the turtle changed with the passage of time. 82 stone tablets remain. They depict the names and birth places of 1307 graduates of 82 triennial royal exams. Between 1442 and 1779, eighty-one exams were held by the Le dynasty and one was held by the Mac dynasty. While visiting the tablets, some of  us tried to find Doctors whose first names were like like theirs and wished their ancetor would give them good luck.
Fourth Courtyard

One enters the fourth courtyard through the Gate of great synthesis ("Dai Thanh"). On either side are two smaller gates: the gate of "Golden Sound" ("Kim Thanh") and the gate of "Jade Vibration" ("Ngoc Chan").

Altars to Confucius and his disciples

On each side of the ceremonial fourth courtyard stand two halls. Their original purpose was to house altars to the seventy-two most honoured disciples of Confucius and Chu Van An (a rector of the Imperial Academy). In the centre of the fourth courtyard is the "House of Ceremonies" ("Bai Duong"). The next building is the "Dai Thanh sanctuary", where Confucius and his four closest disciples Yanhui, Zengshen, Zisi and Mencius are worshipped. The sanctuary also hosts altars to ten honoured philosophers. A small museum displays ink wells, pens, books and personal artefacts belonging to some of the students that studied at the temple.
Fifth Courtyard

Fifth Courtyard, grounds of the imperial academy

This is the Temple of Literature – where the thousands of scholars used to study at. It also contains offices, gift shops and a small museum.

The altars

The upper floor is dedicated to the three monarchs who contributed most to the foundation of the temple and the academy: Ly Thanh Tong (1023–1072), who founded the temple in 1070, Ly Nhan Tong (1066–1127), who founded the Imperial Academy, and Le Thanh Tong (1442–1497), who ordered the erection of the turtle stone stelae of doctor laureates in 1484. Temple of Literature – Imparial Academy is very special to Vietnamese people. It’s the symbol of the Vietnamese Education Sector. Everytime I come here, I always feel like there is a voice which is talking to me that “Good luck with your study!” I don’t know why I think like that, maybe because this is the place where the Vietnamese scholars have sent there message to their children that you need to study better to develop Viet Nam. After visiting the Temple of Literature – Imparial Academy, I promise to myself that I will try my best to sudy harder and in the future, I’ll contribute to development of Viet Nam.
